What’s the difference between a budget airline and most ERP vendors? No, this isn’t the setup for a joke, but rather an observation. The answer? “Not a great deal”. Ironically, that’s also exactly what you can expect from both in terms of value. So maybe it is a joke after all.
Over the years, budget airlines have found ways to monetise nearly every aspect of travel that was once included in the ticket price. Want an in-flight meal? That’ll cost extra. Bringing luggage? How quaint – let’s charge extra for that unexpected request. Need to use the toilet? Let’s not even go there.
Customer service? Well, if by “service” you mean doing everything yourself – checking in, tagging your own bags and possibly flying the plane – then sure, they’ve got you covered. Give it a few more years and they might just expect you to bring your own aircraft.
Similarly, many ERP vendors follow the same model. While their initial pricing may seem transparent, unexpected costs emerge throughout the implementation process – additional fees for essential modules, customisations, reporting, using the toilet. What seemed like a great deal at the start often turns out to be anything but.
When issues arise, support is often funnelled through self-service portals, knowledge bases and automated ticketing systems, making it difficult to speak to an actual person.
